UK commercial vehicle production fell for the seventh month in a row, according to the latest figures (for up to March). Volkswagen and Seimens, through VW’s Scania Trucks arm, say they’ll be trialling long-distance electric lorries across Europe next year and McLaren has finally got the key to its new Yorkshire factory, probably the world’s most sophisticated car plant.
The McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) will be less about elbow grease and billlowing smoke and all serene ambient noise and carbon fibre. Despite being near Sheffield, the epicentre of all those dark, satanic mills, to eat lunch off its £50m floor will, no doubt, be a treat.
But what sort of music would you listen to while having such a meal? Worry no more because Rolls Royce has come up with a tune called “Inspired by Music” and all the inspiration comes from the sounds made by the new Dawn.
“A hyper-sensitive microphone was used to capture the mechanical and electrical tones of Dawn, including the soft closing doors, the umbrella exciting (sic) from its home in the door, the windscreen wipers, indicators and the Spirit of Ecstasy proudly taking her place on the prow of the motor car. These sounds were then mixed together with deconstructed music stems to create a wholly new track.”
For your sake we’ve listened to the track. It’s not going to be a hit.
If you prefer the sound of lawn mowers, Honda’s got new tunes aplenty. Aside from having a new CR-V to show off at the moment, the maker is celebrating 40 years of selling sod-cutting technology. Showcased at the RHS Flower Show, it’s been trumpeting the Miimo 3000 which can robotically manicure up to 4,000 square metres and is controllable through a smartphone app.
And finally… HPI data cruchers have taken a break from more serious stuff to compile the top ten most entertaining auto ads ever. In reverse order, the top three are: Honda’s 2003 effort, The Cog, featuring a chain of colliding parts form a disassembled Accord, Renault’s 1991-8 Nicole and Papa Clio saga and, in top spot, this unforgettable 1997 pairing of the Ford Puma and Steve McQueen.
