Turbocharged engines like the 3.0-litre flat-six found in the 992 are a pleasure to remap. By fine-tuning parameters like boost pressure, spark advance and AFR (Air to Fuel Ratio), our engineers can develop custom remaps that deliver 15-30% increases in power and torque, a wider power band and a more responsive drive.
Naturally aspirated configurations have less tuning potential but gains to power and performance are still possible, and owners of naturally aspirated Porsches who want to upgrade components like air intakes or exhaust systems will still need a stage 2 remap to unlock the full potential of these modifications.
Most modern Porsches roll out of the factory with a lot of untapped potential. This isn’t an accident either: Like a lot of modern marques, Porsche deliberately detunes most of their cars to improve reliability in regions with poor fuel quality and/or restricted access to high-quality servicing.
Porsche also factory detunes cars with the same power unit to improve differentiation between the models in a given range of vehicles.
As an example of factory detuning in action, the 2020 992 Turbo S and the 2020 992 Turbo both have the same twin turbocharged 3.7-litre flat-6 engine, but a minor upgrade to the turbo compressor wheel and a better-optimised ECU map means that an unmodified Turbo S gets 641 hp to the Turbo’s 572 hp.
That’s an 11% difference, but as anyone who’s driven both the Turbo and the Turbo S will tell you, that relatively modest difference has a tremendous impact on the way the Turbo S drives.
Detuned Porsches with turbo or naturally aspirated engines have plenty of room for improvement. A carefully calibrated remap will improve headline stats like torque and horsepower, as well as eliminate any irritating flat spots, smoothing out torque curves, improving throttle response and increasing the availability of low-end torque so that you can pull away from the line and move up through your gears more quickly.
Performance improvements for individual configurations do vary; we are not in the business of producing generic ‘ECU flashes’, and our software engineers spend a lot of time fine-tuning individual solutions to maximise performance in real-world scenarios.
