The Volkswagen Golf VII 2.0 GTI TCR takes its name from the Golf TCR race car, and this lineage is apparent even before you turn the engine on. Eighteen inch alloy wheels, a front bumper which just about clears the ground and a rear diffuser combine to create a sense of excitement, but nothing has been sacrificed in terms of practicality. 

Five doors, the same number of seats and plenty of boot space mean that the Volkswagen Golf VII 2.0 GTI TCR is still the ideal family hatchback, but the high performance touches in this iteration make it the perfect choice for the family man or woman who still wants to get a buzz out of driving. 

The 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder turbocharged engine packs a powerful punch, and when delivered in synch with the 7 speed, automatic transmission DSG gearbox it offers acceleration from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds. The TCR doesn’t have the four-wheel drive present in many Volkswagens but the alternative – electrically-locking mechanical differential – means that the front wheel drive still feels secure even in the rain. 

The performance which is delivered by a factory-fresh Volkswagen Golf VII 2.0 GTI TCR is doubtlessly impressive, but it doesn’t represent the full potential of the engineering under the bonnet. 

The software which controls the engine places artificial limits on what can be delivered, but here at Avon Tuning we can do better than that, providing a custom rewrite known as an ECU remap. This new software will mean that the power provided by the engine lifts from 290hp to 350hp, while the torque on offer shifts from 380nm to 460nm, with flat spots in the torque curve becoming a thing of the past.
