The BMW M3 G81 Touring has quickly become one of the most desirable performance estates on the market. Combining everyday usability with genuine M-car performance, it’s the perfect all-rounder and of course we couldn’t resist pushing it further.
While unlocking and tuning this generation of ECU has technically been possible for several years through specialist solutions such as Femto paired with BootMod or MHD, the process was costly and required additional licensing, making it less practical for widespread use. Like many in the industry, we were waiting for a more mainstream solution that would allow us to develop and distribute tuning globally.
Following a major breakthrough in late 2025, when Autotuner released their unlock service and OBD protocol support, we were able to move forward with full development, giving us the ability to unlock and tune the previously locked Bosch MG1CS049 ECU, and providing a solution to our International network of Authorised Avon Tuning Agents.

BMW M3 MG1CS049 ECU: Why It Was Locked
The BMW M3 G80/G81 is equipped with the Bosch MG1CS049 ECU, featuring the latest Bosch security protections. Until recently, this ECU was effectively locked down, preventing traditional OBD-based tuning.
Previously, the only solution was a Femto bench unlock, which involved longer turnaround times and higher costs, far from ideal for customers looking to achieve more power from the S58 engine.
Thanks to the recent developments at AutoTuner, we can unlock the MG1CS049 ECU efficiently and reliably, opening the door to full OBD tuning and in-depth data logging.
BMW M3 ECU Unlock Process via Autotuner
Once unlocked, the ECU can be fully flashed via the OBD port using AutoTuner. We send ECUs to AutoTuner on a regular basis, meaning we have a proven workflow that minimises downtime and keeps the process cost-effective.
The whole process takes approximately 3 days however we recommend allowing up to 1 week for potential shipping delays.
Key benefits
- Faster turnaround times compared to previous unlock methods
- Reduced cost for customers
- Full OBD flashing once unlocked
- Comprehensive data logging
This setup has allowed us to carry out extensive dyno testing and real-world validation, ensuring our maps deliver both performance and reliability.

BMW M3 G80/G81 Stage 1 Tune: 680HP on the Dyno
With ECU access, we spent several days on the dyno developing and refining our Stage 1 tuning package for the MG1CS049. The end result significantly enhances performance while staying comfortably within the limits of the factory hardware.
Performance Figures
| Stock | Stage 1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 510 HP | 680 HP (+170) |
| Torque | 650 Nm | 850 Nm (+200) |
| Boost Pressure | Stock | 1.8 bar |
Boost pressure peaks at 1.8 bar which remains well within the safe operating range of the stock turbochargers, and power delivery is smooth and consistent throughout the rev range.

Stage 1 Low Octane Map for Warmer Climates
Not all markets benefit from high-quality fuel or cool ambient temperatures. With that in mind we have also developed a Stage 1 Low Octane map.
The low octane map retains the same peak torque figure for strong mid-range performance while peak power is reduced by approximately 20HP to maintain safe combustion.
BMW M3 Stage 2 Development
With the ECU now unlocked and our Stage 1 proven, further development is already underway. Stage 2 is currently in progress with additional hardware and supporting modifications planned.

BMW M3 G80 / G81 Tuning FAQ
Can the BMW M3 G80/G81 be remapped?
Yes. The BMW M3 G80 and G81 can be remapped once the ECU is unlocked. These models use the Bosch MG1 ECU which requires a bench unlock before tuning can be applied.
How much power does a Stage 1 M3 tune add?
A typical Stage 1 tune increases power from around 510HP to approximately 680HP, with torque increasing from 650Nm to around 850Nm depending on fuel quality.
What is the Bosch MG1CS049 ECU?
The Bosch MG1CS049 is the factory ECU used in the BMW M3 G80 and M4 G82 S58 engine.
How long does the M3 ECU unlock process take?
The ECU unlock process typically takes a few days depending on shipping delays.
Is the BMW M3 Stage 1 tune safe for the stock turbos?
Yes, Stage 1 tuning is designed to work within the limits of the stock turbochargers and supporting components.
What is the difference between the high and low octane maps?
High octane maps are optimised for higher quality fuel such as 99RON, allowing more ignition timing and boost for greater power.
